Golliwogg's Bicycle Club
Golliwogg's Bicycle Club Prints
From the 1896 book by Florence K Upton
Florence K Upton (1873 - 1922)
The Golliwogg series of books were published in England from 1895 through 1909. They told the story of The Adventures of "Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg". At the height of their popularity the books rivaled today's Cabbage Patch Dolls, Pokemon and Harry Potter. The Golliwogg's Bicycle Club was the second of thirteen books in the series and was first published in 1896. The Golliwogg is based on a Black Minstrel Doll Upton played with as a child. In later years Golliwogg came to be associated with racial insensitivity as other artists and authors represented the Golliwogg as rude, mean spirited and ugly. Upton's Golliwogg was curious, sometimes funny, gallant and adorable.
These are original book pages published in the 1890's. Each print size is approximately 10-1/2 x 8" and the matted size is 14-1/2 x 12". The prints are available in a high quality wood frame or matted only.
